Ngā Pao me ngā Pakiwaitara o te iwi Māori - Song and story of the Māori.

Side 1. A programme of Cook Islands music, No.1

This week Ulric Williams presents music of the Māori people of The Cook Islands. [Music tracks appeared to have been recorded on location in the Cook Islands.]
The programme opens with an 'uopo' or hymn, sung at a īmene or church service.
An example of a traditional chant called an 'ute' follows. It was written to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, sung by women from the Matawhero [?] Women's Institute in Rarotonga.

A Rarotongan war chant, compared to a Māori haka but with drum accompaniment, is next.

A Cook Islands' favourite song 'Moana Roa' (The Long Sea - a reference to the Pacific Ocean), is next.

Finally a song written for and dedicated to Princess Te Puea of Ngāruawāhia, sung by a party of visiting Rarotangans who came to New Zealand several years ago.
