News from the Pacific presented by Don Wiseman of Radio New Zealand International.

In this week’s programme

1, Fiji government sessions on the regime's draft constitution have been dominated by people's queries about land.

2. Voters in French Polynesia have gone to the polls in the first round of the territorial election but it may yet be the courts in France that will shape the politics over the next year.

3. A recent gathering of leaders from around the region at New Zealand's parliament has drawn attention to the idea of a regional parliament in the Pacific.

4. Cooks Islands pensioners are pitting themselves against the government over tax laws surrounding their collection of New Zealand superannuation.

5. Papua New Guinea's Office for Higher Education says the country's six universities are badly underfunded and its director general, Professor David Kavanamur, says they will be pressing for more assistance in the next Budget.

6. Tertiary education in Solomon Islands looks likely to become a lot cheaper. The Solomon Islands National University has now officially replaced the College of Higher Education in the capital, Honiara, while close to the city the University of the South Pacific is to establish a local campus.

7. Residents involved in a coastal management programme in Vanuatu are celebrating one of its main outcomes - more fish.
