1. Fiji has set a date for the first democratic elections in the country in eight years. The president Ratu Epeli Nailatikau has signed off September the 17th as the day set aside.

2, A battle for the young vote is gathering pace in Fiji on social media.

3. The World Health Organisation says the current Pacific-wide outbreak of dengue is causing health systems across the region to be strained in both resources and finances.

4. The opposition in Nauru says the government is squarely to blame for the decision of an Australian bank to downgrade its involvement in Nauru.

5. The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial killings [i.e. Christof Heyns] says Papua New Guinea must institute a national human rights body.

6. There is cautious optimism from tourism operators on Tonga's Vava'u islands following news that Fiji Airways is expected to resume international flights between Fiji and Vava'u.

7. Fiji will send a team to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, after the country's Olympic Committee backed down from a threat to boycott the event.

8. A documentary on the American Samoan soccer team [i.e. Next Goal Wins] is set to hit film festivals next month.
