A weekly wrap-up of news, issues and current affairs from the Pacific. The programme is broadcast nationwide every Saturday evening on Radio New Zealand National and is produced by the newsroom of Radio New Zealand International. The following rundown is supplied from the broadcaster’s news system:

1. The leader of Fiji's Labour Party [i.e. Mahendra Chaudhry] is now considering an appeal after being sentenced to what is thought to be Fiji's largest ever fine.

2. Local people living around a massive gold mine in Papua New Guinea's Enga Province are still waiting to be resettled after residing for years in conditions described as hellish.

3. A new human rights report by a Melbourne University says the Australia's current asylum seeker policies and practices are in breach of at least seven international laws.

4. There's a call for Pacific island soldiers who fought in the First World War to be honoured alongside Anzac troops at New Zealand's main war memorials.

5. The Asian Development Bank says poor water supply and sanitation in Kiriabti is costing the country up to four per cent of its gross domestic product, or about 6.5 million US dollars, a year.

6. The oil and gas multi-national Exxon Mobil says its US$19billion Liquified Natural Gas project in Papua New Guinea has started production ahead of schedule.
