A weekly wrap-up of news, issues and current affairs from the Pacific. The programme is broadcast nationwide every Saturday evening on Radio New Zealand National and is produced by the newsroom of Radio New Zealand International. The following rundown is supplied from the broadcaster’s news system:

1. It has been a dramatic week in Fiji with the first election in eight years, a likely resounding victory by the man who staged a coup 8 years ago and complaints by opposition parties of widespread fraud.

2. The Cook Islands Democratic Party says it will appeal up to three of the petitions it filed against July's general election results which were thrown out by the High Court.

3. A Papua New Guinea human rights NGO, Voice for Change, says poor law enforcement is perpetuating violence against women.

4. Australian Lawyer Robert Herd says he is preparing to file a case against the Vanuatu Government after being deported without notice earlier this month.

5. A corruption watchdog in Papua New Guinea says it is very concerned that the parliamentary opposition has been reduced to just three members from among the 111 MPs.

6. 19 months on from the tsunami that hit Temotu province in Solomon Islands, victims are still living in temporary shelters and awaiting funds to help rebuild their permanent homes.

7. A new report says the villagers living around the Panguna mine in Papua New Guinea's Bougainville want the Government to consider other options to mining.

8. Lawmakers in American Samoa are being asked to fix education and health problems, before they put money into their own pockets.
