07:00 - Bhakti Prabha:
Devotional readings and music presented by Bala Thomson.
Bala Thomson’s history with Wellington Access Radio is as long as the station itself, and more than 30 years after hosting The Indian Programme on Sunday evenings for the first time, she shows no sign of giving up what she believes is an important community service. Others agree with her, as her status as a justice of the peace, a marriage celebrant, and the holder of the Queen’s Service Medal, for her voluntary service to the Indian community, clearly shows. Add to that the fact that her primary show, The Indian Community Programme, was top Community and Access Programme for 2003 in the NZ Radio Awards for that year, and continues to maintain the high standard expected of an award-winning show, and you have a pen portrait of a highly professional communicator. The Indian Community Programme was one of the original programmes broadcast when Access Radio began in 1981. Today it is the only one that is still aired weekly by the first and only broadcaster. It features a delicious fortnightly cooking/recipe section and up-to-minute information from Bollywood. Bala’s devotion to reaching out to her community does not rest with the Indian Community Programme: more than 20 years ago she started another, called Bhakti Prabha, specifically for listeners devoted to the soft tones and haunting and restful chants of Indian religious music. This is Bala’s Saturday morning start-of-the-day hour so appreciated also by people of other communities and creeds. And in her unique way, she does both programmes in three languages – Hindi, Gujarati (her mother tongue) and English -- and thus succeeds in reaching a remarkably wide audience. Bala’s talents are spread even wider: as well as celebrating more than 30 years with Wellington Access Radio, she has also spent more than a quarter of a century teaching cooking in community colleges around Wellington. Today, her cooking classes are found in Hutt Valley, specifically at Hutt Valley High School and Upper Hutt College where – as demand arises – she can teach Indian, Italian, Eastern or Chinese-Thai cooking. Thousands of students have learned exotic and tasty dishes from Bala, and many come back year after year to expand their skills.

10:00 - World Teacher:
The one awaited by all religions has come when we least expect it.
John and Bernice O’Donnell were the original programme makers for the monthly “World Teacher” slot which started around 1983 or 1984. They were loaned a book titled "The Reappearance of the Christ and the Masters of Wisdom". This book, by Benjamin Creme profoundly affected them, stating as it did, the momentous information of the return to the world of Maitreya and His group of Masters. With this knowledge came the certainty that the public must be informed, but how? And in that need was the genesis of the "World Teacher" programme. More recently, it is Teresa and David Johnston who present the “World Teacher” programme. Tune in every four weeks on Saturday at 10am. Who is Maitreya? He has been expected for generations by all of the major religions. Christians know him as the Christ, and expect his imminent return. Jews await him as the Messiah; Hindus look for the coming of Krishna; Buddhists expect him as Maitreya Buddha; and Muslims anticipate the Imam Mahdi or Messiah. Although the names are different, many believe that they all refer to the same individual: the World Teacher, whose personal name is Maitreya (pronounced my-tray-ah). Preferring to be known simply as the Teacher, Maitreya has not come as a religious leader, or to found a new religion, but as a teacher and guide for people of every religion and those of no religion. At this time of great political, economic and social crisis Maitreya will inspire humanity to see itself as one family, and create a civilization based on sharing, economic and social justice, and global cooperation. He will launch a call to action to save the millions of people who starve to death every year in a world of plenty. Among Maitreya's recommendations will be a shift in social priorities so that adequate food, housing, clothing, education, and medical care become universal rights. Under Maitreya's inspiration, humanity itself will make the required changes and create a saner and more just world for all. For more information visit: share-international.org
