A weekly wrap-up of news, issues and current affairs from the Pacific. The programme is broadcast nationwide every Saturday evening on Radio New Zealand National and is produced by the newsroom of Radio New Zealand International. The following rundown is supplied from the broadcaster’s news system:

1. Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Nauru have been criticised for failing to protect human rights in Amnesty International's annual look at human rights abuse around the world.

2. Papua New Guinea's government is hoping revised child protection laws will put a halt to increasing numbers of children forced to fend for themselves on the streets.

3. The traditional external powers in the Pacific are still coming to terms with China's increasing level of engagement in the region.

4. An employer [i.e. Jono Bushell, Vinepower] in the Recognised Seasonal Employers Scheme in New Zealand has gone the extra mile by helping his former workers set up Tanna Farms in the southern Vanuatu province.

5. A member of Fiji's opposition Sodelpa party is planning to take the country largest newspaper, the Fiji Sun, to court, for what he says is consistently unfair reporting.

6. Tonga is preparing to finally ratify the United Nations convention on eliminating all forms of discrimination against women but with conditions.

7. Officials remain confident Port Moresby will be ready when the Pacific Games kick off in just over four months time.
