The Mongol Derby traces the route Genghis Khan built in 1224 to create the world's first long distance postal service. The route existed until 1949 when it was shut down by the Soviet Union. The weather on the course changed dramatically from the first half of the race and the medical crew went from treating heat stroke to mild hypothermia.

Playing Favourites with Luke Di Somma
BODY:
Freelance conductor, musician, composer, musical director, and founder of the Christchurch International Musical Theatre Summer School and Christchurch Pops Choir. He is co-creator of That Bloody Woman, a musical about suffragist Kate Sheppard, which has its world premiere at the Christchurch Arts Festival.
EXTENDED BODY:

Luke di Somma is a freelance conductor, musician, composer, musical director, and founder of the Christchurch International Musical Theatre Summer School and Christchurch Pops Choir, and until, recently was the conductor of the Christchurch Youth Orchestra.
He is the composer of That Bloody Woman, a musical about suffragist Kate Sheppard, which has its world premiere (28-30 August) at the Christchurch Arts Festival (27 August to 20 September).
Four years in the making, That Bloody Woman sees Kate Sheppard relocated to 2015, and wondering "Where’s the progress?”
Di Somma was looking for a project with local subject matter, and reckoned the energy of this subject demanded music. He sees Kate Sheppard as embodying the best NZ values… the underdog, fighting unfairness. “All the best musicals are about underdogs.”
Will people leave the venue humming the tunes? He hopes so, there are a couple of catchy numbers, but the goal is to make an integrated work where the songs all work to the larger whole “If a song, no matter how good, doesn’t fit or work – it goes.”
The music is eclectic, encompassing rock, the punk aesthetic, a show tune vibe. It's good time music, presented on stage by four young Christchurch rock/pop musicians (he sees it as the “ultimate Rockquest band”) because he wanted the music elements to echo the youthful vigour of the suffrage movement. The cast includes Auckland singer and actor Esther Stephens, now Melbourne based, in the lead role.

The small print
At 12:15pm the US Food and Drug Administration has just approved a drug to treat female sexual dysfunction. But there are concerns about the safety of Flibanserin, a so-called 'female Viagra', and what it's actually meant to be treating. Dr Ray Moynihan wrote a book called 'Sex Lies and Pharmaceuticals' back in 2010, and has been studying the research and the marketing surrounding "female sexual dysfunction" for more than a decade.

Then at 12:30pm, how keeping chickens is making people happier in retirement homes. HenPower started up 4 years ago and so far it's set up hen houses at 23 rest homes in the UK. The residents learn to look after the chooks and participate in all sorts of other chicken-related activities too, from photography to dance and music. Along with a supply of free, freshly laid eggs, the whole experience has been shown to reduce feelings of isolation and depression and is attracting interest from overseas too.
At 12:40pm, Celia Hatton enters the strange world of China's performance websites, where singers and other performers can earn big bucks and attract millions of online viewers every day. The appeal to these budding music stars is obvious; a huge online global audience and no expensive studios or production facilities needed, with many of them just doing their thing from home.
And at 12:50pm the first study yet showing how drones are affecting wild animals' health. These unmanned aerial vehicles have become an important tool in wildlife research and conservation efforts and they're even being used to fight poaching too. But what effect are these drones having on the animals themselves? Mark Ditmer is a researcher at the University of Minnesota who's using heart rate monitors to study the reaction of 4 black bears to drones.
Then after the news at 1:15pm, 'The Triumph of Seeds' is the name of Thor Hanson's book describing how grains, nuts, kernels, pulses and pips have shaped human history. Seeds can lie dormant for hundreds even thousands of years, and then come back to life and sprout when conditions are perfect. As you can probably tell from the title he's a big fan, not just of all the uses we humans put them to, but also of all the ingenious ways they have to help plants reproduce.
At 1:30pm Peter Griffin's in Israel looking at how it's become a 'start up nation' with more start up businesses per capita than any other country in the world.
And before we go how scientists are fighting tsetse flies and the sleeping sickness they spread using a colour- blue. Sleeping sickness is a nasty parasitic disease spread by the tsetse fly that threatens millions of people and animals across sub-Saharan Africa. Luckily tsetse flies have an Achilles Heel, an overpowering attraction to a certain shade of blue. Professor Steve Torr from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine is using the discovery to develop better ways of killing them.

Released just this month Compton: A Soundtrack is the title of Dre’s third – and what he says will be his final – album. Munki Studios
There is a high likelihood that somewhere in your music collection an album or two bears the name Mike Gibson or Munki Studios. For 20 years, Gibson and his Wellington studio have had a hand in some seminal local releases from bands like Fur Patrol, Trinity Roots, So So Modern and The Hasselhoff Experiment. But the landlords have called time on their lease, which means it's time for one last hurrah. Yadana Saw checks on the party prep for The Munki Mash and takes a tour of the building, which was once home to the SIS.
