Ian Austen of the New York Times is a cycling fan who's been looking at the history of 'mechanical doping' in cycling.
EXTENDED BODY:
Professional cycling has been dogged by allegations of cheating for decades - now the cheats are getting even more creative.
After years of rumour, denial and innuendo, the Lance Armstrong affair uncovered the full extent of doping in the sport. Now cycling is facing another threat to its credibility - the news that some riders are using tiny motors inside their bike frame to give them an edge over their purely pedal-powered rivals.
A 19 year old Belgian cyclo cross rider was busted at the recent world champs, and has just been fined and suspended from the sport for 6 years by the International Cycling Union. The BBC is calling it 'the first case of motorised doping in cycling'.
Ian Austen has been looking at the history of mechanical doping in pro cycling. He says that although this may be the first modern case, some early riders in the Tour de France were disqualified after they got towed along by cars using thin piano wires!
The Stade 2 story of 1 April 2016 referred to in the interview (in French).

IQ tests: what can they tell us?
BODY:
Stuart Ritchie is a postdoctoral fellow in cognitive ageing at the University of Edinburgh who calls IQ tests "...some of the most reliable and valid instruments in all of psychological science". He's studying people's IQ scores to see how they can be used to predict the shape of their later life.
EXTENDED BODY:
An IQ test measures your intelligence – but what else can it say about an individual?
"Perhaps the most arresting finding is that IQ scores taken in childhood are predictive of mortality. Smarter people live longer, and this association is still there after controlling for social class" - Stuart Ritchie.

There is evidence linking higher IQ scores with better school performance, career success, a higher income, living for longer and having better physical and mental health.
That's where things start getting complicated because – as scientists like reminding us – correlation does not equal causation. So could a high IQ score just be a handy indicator or proxy for things like better childhood nutrition, your upbringing and your relative wealth?
Stuart Ritchie is a postdoctoral fellow in cognitive ageing at the University of Edinburgh who calls IQ tests "...some of the most reliable and valid instruments in all of psychological science".
He's working with a treasure trove of old Scottish records that are providing some great insights into how well people age, and how IQ can be used as a health predictor for later life.
"We need IQ tests to help us understand how the brain ages, and how we can help it age more healthily. We need IQ tests to help us work out how to boost people's intelligence, and thus to boost their productivity. Perhaps, above all, IQ tests are one of the tools with which psychologists can dissect and examine human intelligence: we'd be extremely unwise to continue to ignore their insights" - Stuart Ritchie.

Gene-edited foods
BODY:
The US Department of Agriculture has just opened the way for the first food to be produced using the gene editing technology CRISPR-Cas9. Meanwhile, gene editing is leaving the lab with a growing band of DIY geneticists and biohackers trying it out for themselves at home. Kristen V. Brown's been looking at these recent developments for Fusion.net.
EXTENDED BODY:
A white button mushroom that won't brown as quickly as conventional fungi (when kept in the fridge) could become the first gene-edited food to go on sale in the US.
The button mushroom's genes were edited using CRISPR-Cas9 – a molecular cut-and-paste technology that is revolutionising the world of genetic science and challenging existing GMO regulations around the world.
The US Department of Agriculture has said it will not stop these mushrooms being grown commercially as no genetic material was added, so technically it has not been genetically modified. Yet the mushrooms could still be banned by the US Envronmental Protection Agency or the US Food and Drug Administration.
The decision has re-ignited the debate about the regulation, ethical implications and health impacts of genetically modified food. Governments around the world are grappling with how to regulate gene editing technology as it becomes more readily available. You can now buy gene editing kits online for under US$100 and a growing band of DIY geneticists and biohackers are trying it out themselves at home.

Dr Chris Smith of The Naked Scientists with the latest science news.
This week, a new form of contraceptive and fertility treatment in one. BODY:
Grime stalwart and proud Eastender Kano takes Sam Wicks back to the East Ham streets of his youth.
EXTENDED BODY:
A stalwart of the UK’s Grime scene since he first announced himself as a precocious, clash-ready teen, Kano is now something of an elder statesman of Grime's UK Garage-influenced, Jamaican music-indebted sound.
"I feel like everything has affected this sound ... even our parents coming from the West Indies and coming over in the '60s," says Kano. "We are definitely influenced by the English culture that we kind of grew up with, but also our parents' reggae music and dancehall."
Kano’s fifth studio album Made in the Manor returns the proud Eastender to the streets of his youth and the relationships that put him on his grimey path.
From his home in London, Kano takes Sam Wicks back to where it all started.

Water Or Gold by Hollie Smith
BODY:
Nick Bollinger delves into the homegrown soul of Hollie Smith.
EXTENDED BODY:
Nick Bollinger delves into the homegrown soul of Hollie Smith.
It begins with the simmering chords of a Hammond organ, a rhythm section straining at the leash, and a voice that could be straight out of some black southern church, warming up with a wordless, soulful moan.
Water Or Gold is the third full-length record Hollie Smith has released in a recording career that is now well into its second decade, and comes on with the kind of assuredness that says you are in the hands of someone who knows what they like, what they want to hear, and are going to do it their way.
Hollie Smith wrote and produced all the songs on Water Or Gold, and it seems very much the product of her particular tastes. She cut her teeth singing along to classic Aretha Franklin and James Brown records, picking up licks and phrases along the way from artists as diverse and individual as Chaka Khan and Prince – all of which I can hear traces of in the opener, from which the album takes its title. Not that it comes off as pastiche. Perhaps the biggest lesson she’s learned from her heroes is that, however much you admire the tradition, the real task of the soul singer is to find one’s own voice. And for most of this album you know you could only be listening to Hollie.
But if Smith has long since absorbed the lessons of her singing heroes into a style that’s identifiably her own, as a songwriter she still sometimes wears her influences on the outside. And in the case of a ballad like ‘In Love Again’, it is as though she has built her song on top of the foundations of an existing classic - in this case James Brown’s ‘It’s A Man’s World.’
Hollie Smith’s trials in the music industry have been well-documented. Enough to say that her career was held up for several years when what was supposed to be her big international break turned to corporate custard. And the residual bitterness from that experience seeped through the songs on her last album Humour and the Misfortune of Others. The title was a strange misnomer; there was little humour and the only misfortune under discussion seemed to be Hollie’s own. You won’t exactly find humour on Water Or Gold either. But there’s a sense that singing about life’s hardships and losses is the surest path to that intangible thing called soul.
Water Or Gold doesn’t fundamentally change Hollie Smith’s formula. As a singer she’s always known who she is and what she wants to do. But as a collection it offers more for the listener to latch onto, as it delves deeper into Hollie’s increasingly personal brand of soul. It’s a record that reaches out by reaching in.
Songs featured: Water or Gold, Anymore, Helena, In Love Again, Holding On, Poor on Poor, Older Younger.
Water Or Gold is available on Warner Music.

Tigilau Ness - Unity Pacific
BODY:
Unity Pacific's Tigilau Ness talks about the years of music and political struggle with Trevor Reekie
EXTENDED BODY:
Tigilau Ness has walked a radical path which has seen him expelled from Mt Albert Grammar, protest the 1970s and 80s Dawn Raids as a Polynesian Panther, and even serve a year’s jail time for opposing the 1981 Springbok Tour.
But throughout the struggle, music and family - he’s Dad to accomplished musician Che Fu - have always prevailed and got him through tough times.
Prior to the release of their new Unity Pacific album Blackbirder Dread, Tigilau sits down with Trevor Reekie and talks about the importance of knowing your roots.

The Secret Life of Birth Music
BODY:
In the Secret Life Of Birth Music, Yadana Saw meets the mums and midwifes, doctors and dads who push play on the soundtrack that greets the newly arrived.
EXTENDED BODY:
The experience of first time pregnancy is equal parts daunting, exciting and exhausting - and that's not just due to the baby swimming around inside you. The well-meaning barrage of seemingly helpful advice, gentle suggestion and straight out missives can add to the existential concerns already swirling around soon-to-be parents' minds.
Now that it is medically proven that music can help mothers in labour, expecting parents can add playlist curation to the list of things to add to their birthing preparations.
Feeling the push to learn more, in the Secret Life of Birth Music, RNZ music producer Yadana Saw talks with the pregnant, their partners and the professionals about the playlists that help bring the new babies into the world.

All Of The Above by Joe Blossom
BODY:
Nick Bollinger delights in the existentialist groove-pop of Welllington's Joe Blossom.
EXTENDED BODY:
Nick Bollinger delights in the existentialist groove-pop of Welllington's Joe Blossom.
‘Hearts breaking into song’ sings Joe Blossom, summing up the mood of his excellent second album.
Joe Blossom started out as the solo performing name of Wellington-based musician Sean O’Brien, but has become something closely resembling a band, with drummer Chris Fawdray, bassist Phill Jones and vocalist Holly Beals joining O’Brien as collaborators, and other musicians coming and going, adding everything from saxophones to strings. Yet the music always seems to be built around O’Brien’s voice.
O’Brien has a vocal style that suggests the formative influence of British pop crooners like Bryan Ferry, Morrissey, or perhaps even ABC’s Martin Fry, with a strong falsetto that he puts to good use. But almost as important are the backing vocals, which are beautiful woven around his leads.
There’s a lyric sheet included with this album, and it’s a welcome thing. Not that the words are hard to hear; just that lingering over them in print is a different experience from hearing them sung. And even the inscription ‘For Albert’ or the subtitle (1905) on that title track are like cryptic clues to deciphering a song that on close inspection seems to be about the unknown Einstein, in the days before his discoveries were recognised by the world of science.
O’Brien, it seems, is a poetry buff as well as a historian; that’s clear from the opening song ‘Tyger Tyger', in which he invokes both William Blake and Dylan Thomas. But you’ll notice a lot of question marks on the printed page, too, which point to his own searching, philosophical frame of mind.
One song imagines ‘a slow jam… at the edge of oblivion’, and asks questions about wonder and beauty and what it is that heals our souls? But fine a craftsman as he is, O’Brien is neither precious nor exclusive when it comes to choosing material. And a welcome inclusion here is a song he didn’t write, by fellow Wellington band Terror of the Deep. With a 80s synth arrangement, a faintly Lennon-ish melody and a lyric that explores the “crooked streets of life’s bitter reason”, it fits right in.
Joe Blossom’s All of the Above is a lovely album and a real progression from Nocturnes, his debut of four years ago. It should be available through all he usual digital outlets, but I recommend the vinyl, with the lyric sheet.
Songs featured: The Breaking, The Only Voices, All of the Above (1905), Slow Jam, Here & Now.
All Of The Above is available on Cabbage Tree Records.
