SAWMILLS-CLOSURE: Carter Holt Harvey sawmills at Putaruru in South Waikato and at Mount Maunganui are to close resulting in the loss of more than 300 jobs. Workers at the plants were told today although the company is refusing any comment. The Engineering Printing and Manufacturing Union's National Secretary Andrew Little joins us now. LIVE
ELECT-HEALTH: The National Party is promising to spend almost 29-million dollars a year to allow new mothers to stay in hospital longer, and to try to get family doctors back into maternity care. AUST-ECONOMY: In Australia, the Government has announced a 10.4 billion dollar package to help counter the global economic crisis. Pensioners, carers and low income families are to get lump sum payments of at least 1-thousand Australian dollars as part of the economic stimulus package unveiled today. WESTCOAST-MURDER: One of two men accused of the murder of a Korean hitchhiker near Westport in 2003 has pleaded guilty to the crime at a depositions hearing in Greymouth today. A female associate of the second man has described an alleged confession that he killed Jae Hyeon Kim. Our reporter Geoff Moffett has been at the hearing and joins me now. LIVE
HEALTH-MIDWIVES: Three independent midwives have been faulted by the Health and Disability Commissioner in a case that left a baby girl with a serious brain injury.
