In this recording, an unidentified announcer describes the effect of tidal waves which followed an earthquake in Concepcion, Chile on 21-22 May 1960. Huge waves killed people in Chile and Hawaii.

In Gisborne, the rivers and harbour basin were scoured out by tidal surges. One morning people watched the tide rise 18 feet in 10 minutes. Gisborne Harbour Master, Captain McKenzie Smart, describes the river emptying and then rising rapidly. The water was three or four feet above the fisherman's wharf.

Later that year, Captain Smart died suddenly, after having been Gisborne's harbourmaster since 1939.
