In this recording, Marian Rowe tells of seeing magic lantern slides and then attending the first screening of a moving picture show in 1899 in Southland. She was nine years old at the time.
The evening's entertainment cost sixpence and also included the first public playing of cylinder sound recordings on a phonograph, and a projection of a life-size photograph of the local school children.
