Hato Paora Māori Boys' College
Hato Paora College for Catholic Māori Boys was blessed and opened by his Eminence Norman Cardinal Gilroy on 27 October 1947. It is the youngest of the Church Boarding Schools for Māori youth, eight years younger than Saint Joseph's, Greenmeadows. The college is owned by and vested in the Archdiocese of Wellington and is under the special patronage of His Grace, The Archbishop. The Fathers and Brothers of the Society Of Mary supply the teaching staff and are responsible for the care and well being of the College. From the first years of the school, when the roll was fewer than forty, the boys of Hato Paora gave themselves enthusiatically to singing, action songs and haka. For many years now, house competitions in Māori oratory and action songs have been held in the third term - House leaders being responsible for the preparation of their teams. No year goes by without at least one worthwhile new action song being added to the College repertoire.
