Rex, Robert, 1909-1992

The 83 year old Premier of Niue, Sir Robert Rex is reportedly under family pressure to retire immediately instead of in a few months time, just before the Niue general elections early next year

In what was effectively a farewell speech to his nation, Sir Robert was able to welcome to the celebrations on Niue, Dame Catherine Tizard, who was visiting the island for only her second time and the first as Governor-General of Niue.

Deputy Prime Minister Don McKinnon, also present on Niue at the Constitution Day celebrations, took time to address some of the concerns raised by Sir Robert Rex.
