Dr. Mervyn McLean, music ethnologist at Auckland University talks about some of the musical instruments used by the Māori of old.

The "putorino" described as being like a bugle flute is explained by Mervyn McLean as well as its uses. Waiata; Pinepine te kura on the putorino.

The "pukaia" is explained by Mervyn McLean.

One of the last exponents of the "koauau" was the late Mrs Paeroa Wineera of Ngāti Toa/Ngāti Raukawa tribes. Before playing the koauau she explains the story behind the music the waiata "Moe Hurihuri".
