- Mirika Szaszy -
Quotation:

"Seek the knowledge of the pakeha, reach the summit", was the catch cry that
rang in the ears of Mirika Szaszy as a youngster in the far North at a place
called "Te Hapua" in the far North, where she grew up.

During her climb to the summit, Mira collected a BA in education from Auckland
University, and a diploma in Social Science from the University of Hawaii, is a
past President of the Māori Womens Welfare League, foundation member of
the Māori Education Board, and a member of the Race Relations Council. She
has been honoured by the Queen for her services to the Māori people.

Today Mira talks with Leonie Bresnahan from her early childhood when Māori
values often gave way to pakeha values.
She talks about training college, university, teaching then she moved in to the
Māori Affairs department and became a welfare officer.
It was while Mira worked for the Māori Affairs department that her feminist
views flourished, nurtured by personal injustices on the promotion line; to be
continued on ID:5279 mpt 3292.
