WESTERN SAMOA RESIDENCY: The New Zealand Goverment allowed a
four month extention period for Wetsern Samoans to apply for permanent
residency in NZ which closed at the end of September. Under a special
arrangement NZ has set aside a quarter of eleven hundred Western Samoans
who can settle in New Zealand each year. In the past this quota was not met
because applicants were not able to fulfill the criteria of having a solid job offer
in New Zealand before permanent residency is granted, however because of
the extension the Minister says they should be able to meet the numbers,
although he has a concern with the applicants making false declarations

HOTEL INDUSTRY: In FIJI there are moves to intice multi million investments
in the Hotel Indusrty. The FIJI Goverment wants the construction of up market
5 Star Hotels to cater for an icreasing number of tourists. These up market
hotels are geared towards tourists from Japan, Korea and the European
countires.
- kaikōrero: Prime Minister Sitiviti Rambuka has annouced major concessions
including a twent year tax holiday and a100% tax write off on all capital
expenditure in any one year over eight years also allowing duty free entry on all
capital equipment to qualify all hotels must be completed by June 2000.

YOUTH in MANUKAU: About one hundred youth from around South Auckland
including Pacific Islanders held a conference about issues of concern to them,.
The conference was organised by Roger Jolly of the Manukau City Council.
Some of the issues discussed was about, racism, truancy, violence in schools,
homes and streets, abuse, safe sex and coming to sexuality in the 90's.
