Magazine programme for Pacific People.

TRADE in the PACIFIC: A workshop was held in FIJI to look at the problem
areas of "Trade" and "Investments".
The workshop was attended by people from Fiji, Vanuatu, Western Samoa.
Kiribus, Tuvalu, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea was organised and
funded by the European Union.(EU).....Auckland South Pacific Trade
Commissioner Steve Houlihan as a result of the workshop funding was made available through EU for trade and investment promotion.

SMOKING: The Goverment has put in place a ban on tabacco sales for 18 yrs
and under. Sam Thompson spoke with Helalth Minister Jenny Shipley as to how
the increase in age limit from sixteen to eighteen is going to prevent young people
from smoking.....

PI NEW MOTHERS: Many Pacific new mothers in NZ having babies are children
and as such are at high risk of post natal disress according to Vienna-Cinema
Sio-Rrichards of......." West Auckland Post Natal Distress Support Network Trust".
Pacific women have the highest fertility rate in every district in the Northern Region,
and 60% of those becoming mothers are under the age of twenty.....PND is difficult
when it appears in Community that has no words for depression or mental illness
and don't find it easy to access helping services.

FIJI BLIND LAWS: FIJI rcently changed its laws to allow Blind People the use
of Guide Dogs in public places and public transport. At present there is only
one guide dog in FIJI brought in from the United States and is owned by the
President of the United Blind persons of Fiji.. STitereki Seru. He was in Auckland
to attend the Annual Conference of the NZ Assn Blind and Partailly Blind as well
as undertaking a leadership training programme with the Foundation for the
Blind.
