Magazine Programme for Pacific Peoples.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT: There has been a move to introduce new ways of
Justice due to the belief that the Justice system is not be working to prevent
crime and reduce the numbers in prison. There has also been a desire to return
to traditional forms of justice. The Ministry of Justice has released a discussion
paper on the options and implications on the sysems of "restorerative justice".
Justice Minister Ann Hartley says the paper is to ensure that they get views of
the different communites including Pacific People

DUTY FREE: The rules of origin under the SPARTAGAR Agreement has been
an issue of conention for a number of Pacific countries wanting duty free access
for their products to the Australian and New Zealand markets. FIJI exporters in
particular have been arguing for a relaxiation of the rule which requires over 50%
of local input to qualify for duty free access.

LIBARY BOOKS: It is a consant battle for Pacific Islands countries to get books and
materials for their libaries., now the countries are struggling to save their books from
being destroyed by the adverse affects of "insects"...Tonga, the cook Islands and
Samoa are three Pacific countries despratly trying to preserve their library books.

HEALTH RESERACH: The Pacific Island Health Reseach Council want more
Pacific people to carry out research among their own communities. A seminar
was held in Auckland to inform people on how to apply for Helath grants.
Chairman of the council Dr.Colin Tukitonga said more quality research was
required to be done on Pacific people.
