Biological Diversity Conference: A conference was held in Indonesia, and the
Pacific countries made it clear that they oppose patently of human genetic
materials by Goverment and bussiness organisations. The issue was raised at
the conference on the convention on biological diversity following concern at
a United states company patenting human cell lines of some Solomon Islanders
and Papua New Guineans. It also include discussions on bio-prospecting of
plants in Pacific countries by multi national companys who analyse the property
of native plants and patented for manufacture of commercial products. A New
Zealand representative at the conference Aroha Mead said a low payment
offered by the companys and future generations having acces to these plants
are issues that needed to be clarified.

FIJI Sugar and General Trade Union:

Anthony was in New Zealand completing the final stages of his diploma of
Industrial Relations. He talks with Moera Tuilaepa about New Zealands
attitude towards trade Unions.

ASIA PACIFIC Regional Conference: Successful but room for improvement
were the comments made at the Asian Pacific Conference held in Christchurch
These comments were made by the organisers of the conference.

problems they faced. with over six hundred people.

Centre of Hawaii who spoke about there reasons for attending the confeence.

Services, layed the blame on the shoulders of the Goverment for the lack of
Pacific representation at the conference.

EARLY CHILHOOD EDUCATION: There is not enough funds allocated for early
childhood education among Pacific Island countries says Poko Morgan/ Early Childhood education project director of "Anauako Pacificka". She has just returned
from a trip to Tonga, Cook Islands and Western Samoa. She spoke with Sam
Thompson about the lack of funding was the major concern amoungst the Pacific
Island countries.
