CLOSURE of Cook Islands Posts: Cook Island Prime Minister, Sir Jeffrey Henry
announced some drastic measures in order to pull the country out of financial
crisis. Once a debt free nation the Cook Islands is fighting a foreign debt which
has ballooned to around a hundred and thirty million dollars and an internal
defient of more than three million dollars.
One of the measures was to close and down size overseas posts, including
the Sydney and Canberra office and reducing the staff in Auckland from seven to
three. the Wellington office to stay as is with no changes..The High Commissioner to New Zealand Avita Short said that he had resigned after ten years in the Wellington post.

FIJI's Finance Minister Berenardo Ian Bombor is pushing the countrys agriculture
sector to become more export orintated, hes looking at NZ's as potential market
for FIJI's fruit and vegetables exporters. FIJI's tourism and agriculture sector must
get their act together to exploit the NZ market. Bussines consultant Peter
Thompson a former Director of FIJI carried out a study for the NZ Goverment
to identify the potential areas of trade between FIJI and New Zealand.

EASTER ISLAND: After seven years of work in New Zealand, a linguist has
deciphered an old script found on Rapanui or Easter Island.
Director of the Institute of Pacific Island languages, Dr. Steven Fishers says the
find shows that the Easter Island inhabitants were the first in Oceana to have
their own writing.He says it was the Spernish? who inspired the Rapanui to write
when they arrived in Easter Island three thousand five hundred and fourty Kilm's
west of Chile. He spoke with Moere Tuilaepa about how he came to know about
the old script.
