Twenty-one Māori and Pacific Island students gathered together at Hato Petera Māori Boys College in Northcote to attend a introductory course in journalism.

Gary Wilson from the Training Board planned the course with some help from the Department of Māori Affairs and Te Reo o Aotearoa. The course attracted fifteen Māori students, four Samoan, one Tongan and two Niue Islanders; their ages ranging from fifteen to twenty-one.
