A ‘Family Gathering’ recording for the BBC, the Southward family of 322 Muritai Road, Eastbourne, Wellington. They discuss their experiences since arriving in New Zealand in the 1920s.

Charles Southward is originally from Ramsey, Isle of Man, and Mrs Rosina Southward (nee Fielding), originally from Lancashire, send their greetings to family and friends. Their son, Ramsey (nine years old), also sends his greetings.

Mr Southward left England for New Zealand in September 1924. He didn't know anyone here, and didn't have a job awaiting him. He speaks about his arrival, and his original poor iimpression of the country - which came from meeting an Englishman returning home due to isolation and lack of opportunities. However, this poor impression didn't last, and Mr Southward soon found work as a wool sorter.

Mrs Southward came to New Zealand as a domestic servant, with her passage paid. She discusses life as a housekeeper, attitudes to domestic servants, class attitudes and the general nature of New Zealanders compared to the British.

Mr Southward compares New Zealand farming with British, and speaks of his position as health officer in Samoa and New Zealand.

Actual recording date unknown.
