Paakiwaha is a weekly, lively, thought provoking and debate packed two hour current affairs program with a Māori perspective.
Paakiwaha is hosted by Willie Jackson (Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Porou) and broadcast nationwide by Radio Waatea with funding from New Zealand On Air.
Greetings and programme rundown.

MUSIC BREAK.

CANDY LANE: Ngāti Maru and Co-Host of TVNZ's 'Dancing with the Stars' Show. A pre-recorded interview with Maureen O'Connell from her programme "Get off the Couch". Candy talks about growing up and how her mother kept their Māori side quiet so they didn't suffer as she had but now Candy is excited, discovering and embracing her Māori side. Candy also talks about her Dance Company and some of the shows they have been involved with and her time with "Dancing with the Stars".

PROF. WHATARANGI WINIATA: President of the Māori Party, talks with Willie about the Māori Party Delegation wanting to travel to Fiji to talk with Commodore Frank Bainimarama. Whatarangi talks about how he perceives the indigenous, bi-cultural society in Fiji and Land being lost to indigenous Fijians. He also talks about what the Māori Delegation hopes to achieve by the visit.

TANIA SIMON: Spokesperson for the Board of the New Zealand Deaf Association and a Kelston Deaf Education Centre worker talks with Willie about last week's, 2009 Annual Sign Language Week. NZ Sign Language has just become New Zealand's Third Official Language. The New Zealand Sign Language Act was passed last month. Forty percent of two hundred thousand Māori are deaf. Tania tells Willie how and why she came to work with the deaf and how she can sign in Te Reo and the difference with the International signing styles.

CYRIL ROBERTS: The exhumation of skeletal remains of ancient Māori during excavations on the new International Airport Extensions have upset local South Auckland Iwi who are up in arms for the disrespect shown. Cyril is one of the spokesman for Makaurau Marae of Tainui Iwi in Mangere. They say in the past year eighty five ko-iwi have been exhumed by Contractors. Cyril talks us through the land ownership, the responsible parties and the lack of communication between all parties involved.

MUSIC BREAK: Joe Williams - "Maranga ake ai".

BILL OSBORNE: Former All Black, Former Chair of Hautaki Trust, the Trading Arm of The Te Huarahi Tika Trust and currently Chairman of Two Degrees Mobile Phone Company. Hautaki Ltd was able to purchase the Radio Frequency 2.3GHZ and 2.5 GHZ Bands, the 2G and 3G Spectrum. A new Mobile Phone network called "2 degrees" will start Phone Service from August this year using this Radio Spectrum and Hautaki will have 19 percent ownership.

TARIANA TURIA: MP, Co-Leader of the Māori Party talks with Willie about the Wanganui City Council ban on Gang Patches being worn in town. She believes this ban will have no effect on intimidation throughout the town.
They also discuss the Wanganui - Whanganui naming issue and the Māori Party Delegation wanting to visit Fiji to kōrero with Frank Bainimarama and other leading Fijians and indigenous peoples.

JULIAN WILCOX: Broadcaster and Winner from last Saturday night's New Zealand Radio Awards for the Top Māori Language Programme, "Tawera" a daily one-hour morning current affairs programme on Radio Waatea. He talks with Willie about the surprise of winning this award and about the difference in broadcasting in Te Reo compared to English.

DUNCAN GARNER: Qantas Media Award winning Political Editor, with a Weekly wrap-up of Politics. Duncan talks about the Māori Party Cultural visit to Fiji, Parliament going to Urgency on Wednesday over the Auckland Super City.

KEN LABAN: Lower Hutt Mayoral Candidate, Prominent Community Leader and Sports Analyst and Commentator, with a Weekly wrap-up of Sports. Ken talks this week about the Super 14 and the Auckland 'Blues' being out of form, the Chiefs - Hurricanes game and in Rugby League, the Kiwis loss to the Australian Kangaroos last Friday
