A voiceover in the ‘gobbledegook’ style of ‘Professor’ Stanley Unwin made this a memorable commercial.

The commercial opens on “four hungry lads” - portrayed by grown men in school uniforms banging their cutlery on the dining room table - “who just loveled the spongy puds their Mumble make.” Mumble brings her sponge pudding to the table.

“Then,” continues the narrator, “on a night before Christopher, Mumbledy say, No more slaving the kids to make ‘em spongy puds.” She shakes her head and taps her ‘Women’s Lob’ badge while the boys, all in one one bed, wail. The voiceover continues: “Boys were upset and cry-babied. ‘Til, one ... day, the boys Christopher-Columboed Coleman’s Self-saucing Spongy Puds.” A close-up of the product can and its ‘self-saucing ‘nature as the contents are tipped upside down. The verdict at the dining room table is: “Deishimo! Boys sat stary-gazed upon their cromble plates and were happiness filled. And so was Mumble.” She nods approvingly at the head of the table.
