[AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 MINUTES]

Clive Sowry in “New Zealand Film: An Illustrated History” (Te Papa Press, 2011) writes, “The film was taken by [Charlie] Barton and [Vanie] Vinsen, and was made into two travel features Around the World in 80 minutes and a successor film Across Two Oceans and a Continent, both released in 1923”.

A partial around the world journey on an ocean liner. The party leaves England on board the goods ship Orvieto. They sail through the Suez Canal and visit Gibraltar, Toulon, Naples, the Straits of Messines and enter Port Said.
After leaving Port Tewfik, the final station, they sail into the Red Sea where they see the Jabel Zukur lighthouse and a big French oil tanker standing by.
Onboard there is a fancy dress ball. They reach Colombo at sunrise and see “a panorama of the beautiful Bay and the Grand Oriental Hotel”. Later a snake charmer “succeeded in giving us that goosey feeling down the spine”.
In Ceylon, the tourists visit the markets, the famous Cinnamon Gardens and the lace makers at Mt. Lavania
