He kōrero mō ngā Laughing Samoans

I pakeke mai a Eteuati Ete rāua ko Tofiga Fepulea i roto i te haahi Wellington EFKS (Samoan Congregational Christian), ko te matua o Ete te minita, ko te matua o Tofiga te kaikauhau. Heoi, ka pōhirihia e Ete a Tofiga kia tū hei kaikawe kōrero mō tērā kaupapa ana mai i reira ka hono tēnei tokorua ahurei. Ka hiahiatia te Laughing Samoans e ngā reanga katoa i te mea ko Ete tētahi o ngā tino tohunga o ngā mahi pukuhohe, ana ko Tofiga tētahi o ngā whetū māitiiti koi rawa atu. Pūangi kē ā rāua mahi pukuhohe, kāre i te paruparu, otirā ka whakaatu i o rāua pūkenga ā-puoro, ā-whakaari hoki.

Eteuati Ete
I tuhia e ia te hōtaka moke tuatahi mai i tētahi tangata o ngā Moutere i Aotearoa, ā, koia hoki te kaiwhakaari (The Depot, 1987), ko The Johnny Smith Myth tērā, anō hoki he maha ana pūkenga i te papa tūwaewae, ngā kiriata, whakaata me te reo irirangi.

Tofiga Fepulea’i
He māitiiti Hamoa a Tofiga i whānau mai, i pakeke mai i te Whanganui ā-Tara, ā, i haere ia ki te Kura Tuarua o Rongotai i te Whanganui ā Tara – i haere anō hoki ētahi whetū ki reira pērā i ā Ma’a Nonu rāua ko Roy Kinikinilau. He kaitākaro whutupōro whai pūkenga, i whakairia e Tofiga ana pūtu kia pai ai tana whakapau kaha ki ētahi atu o ana pūkenga (me te take hoki kua kore te hiahia ki te omaoma haere i te papa tākaro mo ngā meneti 80).

Kei roto ia i te Haahi EFKS i te Whanganui ā-Tara, nā reira ka whakareia ngā pūkenga o Tofiga, mai i te ārahi i te tira a te haahi, te mahi i runga whakaata (Tagata Pasefika, ngā ataata pūoro, ngā pānui hoko ā-TV), te mahi me ngā rangatahi mōrea, me te mahi i te ao Whakangahau mo te roanga o te tau. Kua taurima ia i tana whānau me ngā mema o tana haahi mō ngā tau maha, engari kei te kawe i ana mahi pukuhohe ki te ao ināianei. Ko Tofiga tētahi o ngā kaikawe kōrero e tino whāia ana, ka raua atu e ia te āhua namunamuā kore rawa e tareka e ngā Spice Girls (he tau ake hoki ia ki te kanikani!!).

He tangata pono ki te Whanganui ā-Tara, i tīmata ia i roto i te whakaari “Laughing With Samoans”, i puta tuatahi mai i te Wellington Fringe Festival 2003, kua whai angitū nui i te Whanganui ā-Tara, huri noa hoki i Aotearoa. Ko te mahi me te whakaawe i ngā rangatahi o ngā Moutere te mahi e kaingākautia ana e Tofiga, ā, i tōna wā taiohi he maha ngā aukati i wāwāhihia e ia kia ea ai tōna wawata, ka whakaūkia e ia te take he tūnga nui tō ia tangata ki te whakarerekē i ngā oranga o ō tātou iwi mai i ngā Moutere.

About The Laughing Samoans

Eteuati Ete and Tofiga Fepulea’i have grown up together as members of the Wellington EFKS (Samoan Congregational Christian) church where Ete’s father was the minister and Tofiga’s father a lay preacher. However it wasn’t until Ete went to perform his “Laughing with Samoans” show and invited Tofiga to open and MC for him that this unique combination was forged. With Ete one of the elder statesmen of Pacific Island comedy and Tofiga one of it’s brightest young stars, the Laughing Samoans appeal to people of all ages. Their comedy refreshingly, is always clean and showcases their musical and acting talents.

Eteuati Ete
Eteuati Ete was born in Samoa and was 12 years old when his family migrated to New Zealand where his parents were called to serve as ministers of the Samoan Congregational Christian Church (EFKS) in Newtown, Wellington. He was one of the first Pacific Islanders to attend the New Zealand Drama School (1983/84) and was a founding member of New Zealand’s first Pacific Island theatre group formed in 1981 called Taotahi. Taotahi staged the first full length Pacific Island play ever performed in New Zealand called “Le Matau” (1984) in which Ete played the lead role for which he was named by The Dominion’s theatre critics as the most promising male performer of the year. He wrote and performed the first solo show by a Pacific Islander in New Zealand (The Depot, 1987) called The Johnny Smith Myth and has extensive stage, film, television and radio experience.

Tofiga Fepulea’i
Tofiga is a young Samoan man, born and bred in Wellington New Zealand and who was educated at Rongotai College, Wellington- where other notable personalities such as Ma’a Nonu and Roy Kinikinilau also attended. A fierce and talented rugby player, Tofiga hung up his boots to concentrate on his many other talents (as well as the fact that running around for 80 minutes on a rugby field had lost its appeal). A member of the EFKS Church in Wellington, this has contributed to enhancing the talents of Tofiga from leading the church choir, appearing on our screens (tagata pasefika, music videos, TV ad’s), working with youth at risk, and taking on Entertainment full-time this year. For many years he has entertained family and church members but now he is taking his comedy to the world. Tofiga is one of the most sought after MC’s who will add spice that not even the Spice Girls could achieve (and he’s a better dancer too!!) A faithful and loyal Wellingtonian, who debuted in a stand up comedy show called “Laughing with Samoans” which first came out as part of the Wellington Fringe Festival 2003 and has become a huge success not only in Wellington but around New Zealand. Tofiga’s passion is working and inspiring our young Pacific people, and as a young man who had to overcome his own barriers to achieve his dream, he will re-affirm that each and every one of you will play an important role in making a difference to the lives of our Pacific peoples.
