vice regal... British film premiere: Crowds queue at a theatre [could be Regent or Majestic] to watch a new British film about one of Scott’s expeditions to Antarctica. Invited guests include: Mr Cutler, Australian High Commissioner; Mr Pepper, wearing the medal he earned on Scott’s final expedition; the Dutch Consul, Mr JGV Penning; Mr and Mrs WC Hopper from the Canadian High Commission; Mr E Tyler, Consul for Switzerland; Mr A Alexandrov and P Ermasham representing the USSR. The Mayor and Mayoress of Wellington are greeted by the theatre manager and a representative of the film distributors. The Governor General and Lady Freyberg arrive accompanied by their staff.

lake Tekapo... ice skating: At the New Zealand Ice Skating Championships, R Blair wins he 220 metre men’s race while Miss Shirley Buchanan wins the women’s event and the figure skating. Miss Rosemary Murray and Mr TC Grigg win the pairs skating championships.

Auckland... flying boat for pacific service: At the Hobsonville airbase, final adjustments are made to the Sunderland flying boat, Taki Timu. Formerly with the RNZAF, the plane has been converted by the National Airways Corporation for civil aviation. At Mechanic’s Bay, flight engineers go aboard to carry out tests. Taki Timu is ready to carry mail and passengers to Fiji and the islands.
