TE WAIRUA AUAHA was made in partial fulfilment of a PhD in Maori Development, AUT, 2012 and explores Māori entrepreneurship in screen production.

The documentary is based on interviews with ten Māori who own production companies that have produced a significant body of Māori-centric work. It explores their life histories and develops a theory of emancipatory entrepreneurship, founded on the people, places, and passion that underpin their desire for self-determination, and contribution to Māori linguistic and cultural revitalisation, in business and screen production. The narrative of the documentary is embedded in tikanga Māori, beginning with a karanga, karakia and mihi; the interviews are the whaikōrero, which close with a waiata. The opening and closing is a remembrance of those who have passed on, the poutokomanawa of the Māori screen industry.
