Talent: Jimmy Nail

One of a series of commercials for Hutton’s meat products featuring Jimmy Nail, the Geordie actor (‘Auf Wiedersehen, Pet’, ‘Spender’) and hit singer/songwriter (principally Aint No Doubt, 1992).

A construction site with concrete mixer (referencing ‘Auf Wiedersehen, Pet’). A cup is raised in the foreground and black tea poured into it from a thermos. Jimmy Nail opens a patio door, holding aloft his mug of black tea; ‘Could you spare a drop of milk please?’ ‘In the fridge,’ responds a woman preparing food at the kitchen counter while her teenage daughter assists in the background. Nail moves closer to the mother’s preparation, exclaiming, ‘That looks tasty!’ Cut to the daughter looking coquettishly up at Nail through the flowers she is holding. ‘It’s for the French salad,’ replies the mother. ‘Aw raht, says Nail, ‘with French ham’. ‘No,’ laughs the mother, as she moves away to answer the phone, ‘Hutton’s Weekender.’ ‘Hutton’s,’ exclaims Nail appreciatively, ‘that’s a bit of all right!’ He and the daughter lock eyes. She holds the fridge door ajar, a breeze in her hair. A shot from the interior of fridge with them both looking in; “Aw, ham steaks’, exclaims Nail. ‘They’re for our barbie’ exclaims the New Zealand-accented daughter. ‘Must be a big lass,’ surmises Nail.

Hutton’s ‘The Weekender’ Cooked Ham’ packaging onscreen. Well-spoken male voiceover: ‘Hutton’s Weekender. Real ham.’ ‘Huh,’ from Nail.
