Volcanic explosions in Eastern Papua New Guinea takes a heavy toll on the town of Rabaul, now smothered in ash, with 40,000 people having to flee for safety. PNG seeking international aid.

Hamilton doctor, Dr. Jeffery Long anaesthetist, appeared in court today on charge of manslaughter after the death of an elderly patient last year. Gladice Boswell died during a hip operation from a bowel infection. The family of the patient support the doctor.

Haiti: more than 3000 US peacekeeping soldiers have arrived on the island to quell the civil revolution and promote democracy. They are currently co-operating with the Haitian military.

South Africa’s path from apartheid is proving to be anything but smooth. The new multi-racial govt struggles to deliver improvements to black workers, who are staging strikes & protests. Five months after the elections millions of black South Africans still live in extreme poverty in slum-like shanty towns with no electricity or services. Reality is little expected to change in the foreseeable future.
