Opposition to the proposed $1 billion Waikeria prison is increasing. A petition calling for increased prevention of crime and rehabilitation services has gathered thousands of signatures. The proposed expansion would increase prisoner numbers from 600 to 3,000 making the Waikato prison the largest in Aotearoa. Last year King Tuheitia signed an accord with the Department of Corrections to work to reduce recidivism and reintegrate prisoners upon release. 10 ancient taiaha from the pre-colonial period, including one carved from whalebone, will go on display at the MGT Hawke’s Bay in Napier. These unique weapons sometimes reveal surprises and x-rays of other artefacts have found pounamu and teeth within the bindings. They will be part of the Tēnei Tonu exhibition. Pauline Hanson has attacked Aboriginal performers at a peaceful protest on the Gold Coast. The Australian politician has claimed that she feels like a second class citizen in her own country and Aboriginal people have greater rights than other Australians.

The lawn bowls team from Niue are hoping to win medals in the countries 5th time competing in the Commonwealth Games. The country has sent a contingent of 19 sportspeople including a former Miss Niue and 2 Government ministers who will compete in lawnbowls, shooting javelin and the shotput. The Silver Ferns have defeated Wales 70 – 44 in their second Commonwealth Games match.
