Residents of Ngongotahā are tidying up after more than 10cm of rain created a civil defence emergency that led to the evacuation of 30 homes. A 10 metre unfinished kauri waka was unearthed in the Ōkahu inlet by construction workers and the head of Hōkai Nuku says it is the discovery of a lifetime. The deadline for submissions on the Terms of Reference for the Crown Inquiry into the abuse of those in state care ends tonight. A key focus of the inquiry will be the impact on Māori and finding a suitable reference to the Treaty of Waitangi. Talisa Kupenga reports:  Tā Anand Satyanand, Heamana.

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa is speaking out about the bottling of water at Otakiri Springs. Creswell New Zealand Limited has requested to expand their operation and increase the amount of bottled water they export. A meeting in Whakatāne tomorrow will be used to explain the concerns of the Iwi and locals surrounding the resource consent. More than 1,000 students protested at the University of Auckland today as it proposed the closure of three of its specialist libraries. The students association worry that the voices of students are being ignored and the decision to close the libraries has already been made. The proposal is to close the Music and Dance, Architecture and Planning and Fine Arts Libraries and consolidate those resources in the general library. The New Zealand Women’s team has advanced to the quarterfinals at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup in China. The New Zealand team defeated Malaysia 17 – 12 and China 21 – 10 and are now preparing to play against Chinese Taipei.
