Kelvin Davis has condemned the Department of Corrections for not resolving issues with its data and record keeping systems after complaints from inmates between the years 2012 and 2016 came to light. Many of the complaints refer to sexual abuse and assault by Corrections staff and Davis is disturbed that he was not informed of the problems. Chris Hipkins says that the Government is looking to raise the level of achievement of Māori students by creating culturally safe learning environments. This follows claims that teachers were exercising unconscious bias against Māori and Pacific Island students and children. Research has shown that mainstream teachers have lower expectations of Māori children and are unaware of how that belief impacts on education experiences for Māori children. Rangimārie Naida Glavish was made a Dame for her services to Māori and the community at an investiture ceremony today. The honour reflects her work in bridging gaps between Iwi, Government and Community and her work as an advisor on protocol and tikanga.

Voters marched through Whakatāne today in support of a referendum on Māori wards for their local district council. Although the Whakatāne District Council supports the referendum, many voters seem to be unaware of what a Māori ward actually mean and represents. The New Zealand Dance Company are taking their production “Lumina” on tour throughout New Zealand this month. The contemporary dance production features 2 Māori dancers who are broadening their career and enjoying the experience. Chrissy Kōkiri, Te Arawa.  

The sharp increase in the price of kūmara has led one man to create a kūmara bank aiming to make kūmara more affordable for families in Rotorua. Plans to establish a marae in Hawai’i are going ahead. This follows a proposal from the crew of the Hōkūle'a who were investigating connections and networks throughout the Pacific. The crew of the Hōkūle'a considered themselves the 6th Iwi of Northland, Ngāti Ruawāhia, and some of their most revered navigators were welcomed at Te Tii marae in Waitangi today. The Carlaw Heritage Trust have purchased the Auckland Warriors NRL club from Eric Watson for an undisclosed sum. New Zealand Rugby League have congratulated the Trust on their purchase and hope the change in ownership will re-ignite Rugby League in the country. Hakaraia Wilson travelled to San Deigo today to prepare for the IBJJF Championship. The International Brazilian Jui Jitsu fighter is the current silver medalist in the advanced division and will represent New Zealand at the competition.  

The Auckland Blues could be the first New Zealand team to lose to the Australians in the Super Rugby competition in over 2 years. The Waratahs, who are at the top of the Australian table, are the next opponents for the Blues who languish at the bottom of the New Zealand table. Steve Jackson, Kaiako mō ngā Poumua.
