The Government is looking to invest $100 million to fight homelessness and the shortage of available housing. Te Puea Marae is hoping that they will receive funding to continue their Manaaki Tangata programme to support those families who are facing homelessness. The Government has earmarked over $60 million for the expansion of Housing First initiatives and will be directing extra funding into transitional housing supply ahead of winter. The annual Māori Business Leader awards will be held in Auckland tonight with 6 individuals receiving awards for their services and contribution to Māori business. Whaimutu Dewes will be awarded the Māori Governance Leader Award for his work with Ngāti Porou Forests, Moana New Zealand, Sealord Group and Ngāti Porou Seafoods. Kendall Flutey will be awarded for creating an online banking for secondary school students throughout Australasia called “Banqer”. Tāroi Black reports: Whaimutu Dewes, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Rangatihi. Willie Jackson is still in the process of identifying youth employment programmes in regions with high unemployment which could be funded by the Government. With the national Māori youth unemployment rate standing at 21%, Jackson says that it is imperative that the regional growth fund included pathways for youth to transition to the workforce. A private members bill has been drawn in Parliament which would see the Māori seats entrenched. The sponsor of the legislation says it will address the disparity in protection between general electorate seats and the Māori electorate seats. Currently general electorate seats can only be overturned with a 75% majority vote in Parliament, Tirikātene’s bill would mean extending the same majority to the Māori electorate seats.

The Crown held an honours ceremony today that recognised people who had made significant contributions to Māoridom. Hawai’i people living near Mount Kilauea are under an evacuation notice as lava flowed into residential areas.

Horomona “Solly” Pōhatu passed away on Wednesday. The Ngī Tāmanuhiri descendant was a member of the showbands Māori Hi Five and the Māori Volcanics.        

Erena Koopu has just launched a new art exhibition “Hei Ō Mō Apanui” which depicts tribal narratives through the lyrical musings of tohunga and the music of Rikirangi Gage. The descendant of Te Whānau a Apanui is well known for her work at Te Matatini and her involvement in Māori performing and visual arts. Ruth Smith reports: Erena Koopu, Kaiwaituhi. 60 Auckland schools are participating in the first Māori language netball tournament hosted by Te Pūni Kōkere and Netball Waitakere. The Puni Reo Poitarawhiti tournament was held at Te Pai Park in West Auckland and saw over 500 children competing. 29 Year old boxer Bowyn Morgan is hoping for victory in his bout against Andres Rodriguez for the Pro-Box Pacific super welterweight belt. A win will make him eligible for a chance to contest the UBF super welterweight world title.

The Pulse are confident ahead of their ANZ Premiership season opening match against the Magic. The Pulse currently have the youngest roster of players in the netball tournament
