01:28:01 BUIN BASKET MAKING IN NEW GUINEA
“Situated at Southern end of Bougainville, northernmost of the Solomon Islands, the natives of Buin are characterised by their extreme blackness. They are renown for the excellent quality of their hand-woven baskets. Bougainville, which is geographically part of the Solomon Islands, is part of the mandated territory of New Guinea and under Australian mandate. These natives are therefore really a part of Australia. Small in stature, the natives enjoy pig hunting by spear which is a favourite sport and also a festival dish”.
Weaving beautiful baskets - from selecting the cane, to drying, preparing and finally weaving. These wares are sold throughout the territory and exported to Australia. Shows their many uses.
