NEW ZEALAND FESTIVAL OF SOUTH PACIFIC ARTS & CULTURE - AUCKLAND 1984
Thousands of spectators watch single, double and three seater outrigger canoe races take place in Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour. The final race was a regatta for all South Pacific canoes including the ‘Wakatetehau’ Maori waka from Auckland. A powhiri by Ngati Whatua, for the people of the South Pacific occurred at Okahu Bay, symbolising the second arrival of Polynesians to Aotearoa.
Ngati Whatua elders deliver their whaikorero then the chairman of the Festival speaks, followed by the Minister of Pacific Affairs the Hon. Richard Prebble completing the powhiri with the hongi. Led by two Fijian warriors the official party is escorted to the Festival. The Hon. Richard Prebble, the Hon. Minister of the Cook Islands, Sir Thomas Davis, the Maori and Fijian representatives, partake in the Kava Ceremony.
