“12 years ago the New Zealand Prime Minister David Lange ordered the defence force to prepare to intervene in Fiji. It was 1987 and we were all reeling from the shock of a military coup on our very doorstep. There was further outrage when Colonel Sitiveni Rabuka struck again, declaring Fiji a republic and adopting a bluntly racist constitution. But in the past two years Rabuka has undergone an extraordinary metamorphosis, pushing through a new fairer constitution drawn up by our own Sir Paul Reeves. This week as Fiji goes to the polls Assignment asks the question: Is Sitiveni Rabuka on the level and has Fiji seen the last of the gun?” - (Assignment: A Racist Reformed)

Interviews: Lt Col Sitiveni Rabuka; Prime Minister David Lange.
