The XI Olympiad was held in Berlin from 1 to 16 August 1936. New Zealand sent a team of 7 athletes and an official (Arthur Poritt). For many the games are best remembered for Hitler’s failed attempt to prove his theories of Aryan racial superiority - African-American sprinter and long-jumper, Jesse Owens, who won 4 golds, was the most popular hero of the games! For most New Zealanders, however, the memorable event of the games was Jack Lovelock’s gold medal win in the 1500 metres. Lovelock set a new world record of 3 minutes 47.8 seconds.
