“Naya Zamana (Modern Times) is a short drama using non-professional actors about a young Indian woman, how she copes with her life within a non traditional family in the working class suburbs of Auckland. The film depicts a solo mother who is traditional yet isolated, a brother who has become hybridised, and an aunty from Fiji who has come to arrange the young woman's marriage. We glimpse this cross-cultural 'slice of life' from the perspective of the periphery, a state house where the the two older women sling back whiskey and the son moves constantly within a group of mates, until the final punchline which contributes gender antics and sweet rebellion”.
