Kingi is a teenager in a police cell. This is his story - his own memories of how his life’s problems led him into inevitable conflict with the law.

The screenplay is based on the ideas, writings and real-life experiences of a group of teenagers, predominantly Māori, while they were under the supervision of Social Welfare.

Kingi’s Story is their response to the question: why did they become wards of the state?
