Martyn Bates presents this programme from Apia.
For many, to be Polynesian is to be poor, and for years thousands of Samoans have migrated to New Zealand, land of plenty, to share in European wealth. The Privy Council has ruled that an Act passed in New Zealand Parliament nearly 60 years ago makes all Samoans born between 1924 - 1948 and their children, New Zealand citizens as of right. Families can then settle in New Zealand unhindered by political restriction. The New Zealand High Commission in Apia is where the new New Zealanders go for their New Zealand passports.
The average wage in Samoa is $30 per week - New Zealand has a lot more to offer. Action may have to be taken to get around the Privy Council’s decision, because the impact of mass emigration to New Zealand, could cause major economic and social problems for both countries. These problems are discussed.
