One of New Zealand’s leading heart surgeons is quitting the country. Alan Hilless, a central figure in the recent heart transplant controversy says he’s taking his skills overseas following the [Lang] Report on heart surgery.

A senior United States Congressman has proposed a reprisal against New Zealand for its ban on visiting nuclear warships. Congressman William Broomfield wants to change American law to stop preferential deals for arms.

Meatworkers’ Union Secretary Blue Kennedy says he’s paid the price for being outspoken. Kennedy has failed to win nomination for a fourth term and will be succeeded by either the union President or the Assistant Secretary. While the exhibition Te Maori is attracting record crowds in Dunedin the museum displaying it is facing a financial crisis. It’s already paid out about $100,000 to stage Te Maori and has now been told it’s expected to pay another $25,000 to the national organising committee. Speakers: Dr Ray Forster (Museum Director).
