Stars and Stripes has just got the edge over KZ7 heading up the first leg of the first race in the America’s Cup Challenger Series Final. As predicted Dennis Conner is going for straight speed and although he had a 3 second lead at the start of the race, KZ7 ended up in the best position.

A work scheme to help gang members has been suspended by the Government. Under a Labour Department scheme, no further contracts to gangs are being approved while the scheme is reviewed. But there have been claims today that if the review leads to the schemes being abolished, there could be an upsurge in gang violence and crime. Two more trading banks have increased their base lending interest rates. ANZ and National Bank are joining BNZ and Westpac in raising their index rates to 19%.

The French have made a $15 million low interest loan to the Cook Islands to help them recover from Cyclone Sally. The Prime Minister Sir Tom Davis asked New Zealand for a similar loan but was told it would have to be at market rates.
