In Washington the Iran arms scandal has claimed another prominent victim. White House Chief of Staff Donald Regan has resigned, one day after being sharply criticised in the Tower Report on the affair.

Staff at Auckland’s International Airport are concerned that plans to run the airport on a commercial basis may mean a cutback in jobs. Their concern is shared by the Auckland Regional Authority (A.R.A.), which last night effectively lost its role as guardian of the airport. Speakers: Colin Kay (A.R.A. A premature baby is in a stable condition at Waikato Hospital tonight after a mercy dash from Fiji. The boy was brought to New Zealand using resources from three cities, Auckland, Christchurch and Hamilton. Its believed to be the first time New Zealand hospitals have co-ordinated such a rescue. Shopkeepers found guilty of misleading or deceiving the public will face harsh new penalties from tomorrow. The Fair Trading Act comes into force, another step in the Government’s drive to create more competition in the world of commerce. The Act outlaws a number of shady business practices used to trap customers. Speakers: John Collinge (Commerce Commission), Elizabeth Sewell (Consumer Affairs Ministry), David Russell (Consumer Institute).

In Australia Police were called to a country area of New South Wales to forcibly evict a debt-ridden farmer from his land.

The Social Democratic Party candidate has won the by-election in Greenwich, London.
