Tāmati Muturangi Reedy
At Papakura Marae, there is a pōwhiri for Dr Tāmati Reedy, the new Secretary of Māori Affairs and officials from Head Office. Tāmati is being introduced to his people, while at the same time it is a farewell for his predecessor Kara Puketapu, who will now head Māori International, Māori Enterprise. At 47 Tamati has the top job after 2 years with the department, culminating in a Ph D in Linguistics from the University of Hawaii.
He was raised by his grandparents in the remote Kaitoto Station, near Tikitiki, Ngāti Porou and as a young lad returned to his parents, Te Kōtuku and Te Hapuai? Reedy. He attended Hiruharama Primary and Manutahi Secondary School. Tāmati explains the concepts of Kohanga Reo.
