Rob Neale presents the issues of the day. “Registered Securities Ltd, the contributory mortgage company which Eyewitness profiled last week, continues to be a focus for attention tonight, with the company effectively freezing some transactions. The move is a request of the Justice Department who is conducting an audit of some of RSL’s investments.”

Tom Bradley presents the news of the day. [Foreign news - Fiji]. A rescue helicopter has found the wreckage of a Piper Cherokee which crashed early this evening near Dannevirke. A group of protesters camped outside Auckland’s maximum security prison Paremoremo have been shifted by the local council following complaints by residents. The protesters homes of nearly a month were taken down. The protest is about access for visitors to inmates. [Foreign news] Financial and sharemarket news.

Rob Neale presents the issues of the day in depth. Tonight we feature an extended interview with the Prime Minister - his first major interview since he came out of hospital. David Lange is interviewed in his office about the personal and political issues he has faced in the past weeks.

A delegation of Union officials representing clothing workers plan to visit Fiji this weekend. Now it’s been told it won’t be allowed into the country. It’s the latest knock-back for the clothing industry, an industry which says its reeling from cheap imports from Fiji. The number of people employed here in textile and garment manufacturing shrunk by an eighth last year, and that was before restrictions on Fiji imports were relaxed. Jim Greenhough reports that both union and management are bitter that the Government won’t extend protection for the New Zealand industry”.
