Richard McDonald was a New Zealander who had lived in the Cook Islands for 18 years. As a government auditor there he investigated corruption and his outspokeness earned him threats and abuse. He was finally driven into exile in Australia where he died some months after giving evidence at the winebox Commission of Inquiry in Auckland. Evidence points to suicide, a verdict those who knew him do not readily accept.
